A local highway patrol Sergeant is doing her part to help homeless Utahns under the Operation Rio Grande umbrella. Sgt. Kellie Oaks has been taking shifts working weekends at Operation Rio Grande which has been underway for several months targeting the problem of homelessness and crime in the Pioneer Park area of downtown Salt Lake City. Utah Highway Patrol has a section office there next door to the Road Home Shelter and Sgt. Oaks said she has come to know and love the people there and she’s hoping Basin residents can lend her a hand in her efforts. “If we could get people in the Uintah Basin to donate old coats, gloves, and stocking hats, I would love to take them out there,” shares Sgt. Oaks. “There are many people who choose to sleep outside rather than inside the shelter.” Any warm items are welcome but Sgt. Oaks asks that they be clean. Donations can be dropped off at the local Highway Patrol office or at the KLCY studios on North Vernal Avenue.
