The Division of Wildlife Resources asks anglers to consider their well being and that of the fish if ice fishing catch-and-release style. “If an angler is fishing on a particularly cold day, pulling a fish up through a hole and exposing them to freezing conditions can be stressful to a fish,” shares DWR Sportfish Coordinator Randy Oplinger. “The water that remains on sensitive areas — such as the gills or eyes — can begin to freeze and this can cause damage to a fish. So, it is best to minimize exposure time and to release the fish as quickly as possible after catching it.” Of course a general safety recommendation for anglers is to not step on the ice unless it is at least 4 inches thick. Ice thickness can vary across a lake so don’t assume it’s 4 inches thick across the entire lake. The DWR says to be sure to drill test holes into the ice as you venture onto it. The Youth Ice Fishing Bowl is being held tomorrow at Steinaker State Park and the Ice Addiction Tournament at Steinaker State Park is scheduled for February 4th.
