Wyoming Game & Fish Department are urging anglers to be extra cautious as “ice-off” is approaching for Flaming Gorge Reservoir. “Anglers need to be cautious of quickly changing ice conditions as the weather warms up, causing ice to deteriorate quickly. Days are getting longer and the shoreline ice will be the first to go,” shares John Walrath, Green River Fisheries Biologist. “Early ice-off is a great time for anglers to target trout from shore while the backs of bays and boat ramps are still frozen.” It’s the time of year to be extra cautious on or near any body of water in the Uintah Basin. Before doing any sort of ice related activity be aware of the ice conditions, realizing that conditions can vary drastically within a few feet and throughout the day. Be sure to continually check the thickness of the ice if you decide to venture onto the ice. Inform a friend or a family member to the locations you will be at and when they should expect to hear from you.
