Leaders in the west are pleased by the initial report from Secretary Zinke on the Review of Designations Under the Antiquities Act. Zinke specifically addresses Obama’s designation of 1.5 million acres of land as Bear Ears National Monument in the final weeks of his time in office. Zinke says in consultation with the Secretary of Agriculture, he recommends modifying the existing boundary, authorizing tribal co-management of cultural areas, and designating select areas as recreation or conservation areas. Governor Gary Herbert released a statement of support. “This interim report is an important first step towards re-establishing sound land management practices for one of the most special areas in the world,” shares Governor Herbert. “Throughout this process Secretary Zinke has demonstrated the utmost respect for local and tribal input. I encourage the President to take this recommendation seriously and I applaud the secretary for his balanced and responsible proposal.”
