Proactive measures are being taken to limit the spread of Coronavirus, mostly through limiting large gatherings, including church meetings. Backed by the Utah COVID-19 Community Task Force, Utah Department of Health, and Utah Association of Local Health Departments, Governor Gary Herbert announced on Thursday that beginning on Monday, March 16th, Utah communities are asked to limit mass gatherings of more than 100 people. This includes concerts, conferences, church and religious services, or other events where large numbers of people gather. The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints announced shortly after that all public gatherings of Church members are being temporarily suspended worldwide until further notice. Other churches, including the Catholic Diocese of Salt Lake City, made similar announcements. The recommendation does not currently apply to public K through 12 grade schools though school districts are working closely with local health departments to decide if or when it is appropriate to do so. Public, charter, and private schools are being asked to prepare to close in the case it is necessary though closing schools is not directed unless there is an imminent threat to students and staff. Those that are immunocompromised are told to not attend any mass gatherings and, along with those 60 and older, are told to limit participation in groups of more than 20 people at a time. Those that are sick are asked to stay home and employers are asked to show leniency and tolerance for those who are sick and need to stay home. Business leaders are asked to implement teleworking options as soon as possible so that employees can work from home where feasible. Long-term care facilities will have restricted or screened access. All Utah Systems of Higher Education Institutions are ‘going digital’ and social distancing and travel restrictions are encouraged. USU Uintah Basin is among the many schools that have announced plans to transition to an online learning environment wherever possible.
