Give’m Health: New Rule in the Works to Make it Easier to Use Graywater Systems

by | Mar 11, 2020 | News | 0 comments

A new rule will hopefully be implemented this summer in Utah that will make it easier for people to use graywater systems. What is a graywater system? TriCounty Health Department has the scoop. Graywater is the wastewater generated in a home or business that comes from bathroom sinks, showers, tubs, and washing machines. The average 3 bedroom home generates 250 gallons of graywater each day and a permitted graywater system makes it possible for that wastewater to be repurposed as subsurface irrigation. On site graywater systems use a filtration system following regulatory requirements and are only allowed with a permit from TriCounty Health Department obtained prior to installation. The new graywater system rule is anticipated to make it more affordable and easier to get through the permitting process. That rule is awaiting approval from the Water Quality Board. TriCounty Health Environmental Health Scientist Jeff Robb says if you are really interested in putting a graywater system in it would be smart to wait until the new rule is in place.
