February is American Heart Month and tomorrow, February 2nd, TriCounty Health is inviting the community to participate in National Wear Red Day. This is the 15th year that National Wear Red Day is being celebrated and when it was first observed it was to bring attention to the fact that heart disease was the #1 killer of women. According to TriCounty Health Educator Katie Lucio, amazing strides have been made in women’s heart health since that time. “Nearly 90 percent of women have made at least one healthy behavior change which is awesome,” shares Katie, “and more than half of women have increased their exercise.” Six out of ten women have changed their diets and nearly 300 fewer women die from heart disease and stroke each day. Death in women has decreased by more than 30 percent over the past 10 years. Still, there is more to be done and all women are urged to talk with their doctors about developing a heart health plan.
