Heat related deaths and illness are preventable and TriCounty Health is urging the community to make safety a top priority this summer. According to TriCounty Health Director Jordan Mathis, drinking water is crucial during the summer heat. “Drink more water than you usually do,” shares Mathis, “especially if you are outside working or exercising. Drink 2 to 4 cups of water per hour so that you replenish all that you are losing. If you feel like you are overheating, stop what you are doing and find some shade…allow yourself to cool down and drink some water.” Another summer safety must is to wear sunscreen. “The risk of cancer is huge if you don’t protect your skin,” shares Mathis. “Your skin is your largest organ and the most vulnerable. Apply sunscreen and reapply after 2 hours.” Use at least a broad spectrum SPF 15 and also wear sunglasses to protect your eyes.
