Over 500 different minerals are found in Utah, six of the most valuable are highlighted in the most recent newsletter from the state Division of Oil, Gas and Mining. Gilsonite, found and mined exclusively in Uintah County, is among the few that are only found in Utah, making them unique and valuable to the rest of the world. Gilsonite is a shiny, black, solid hydrocarbon that has been mined in Utah since 1888 and is a trademarked brand name for this naturally occurring hydrocarbon resin. Gilsonite is shipped around the world and used in many products including oil and gas, ink, paint, construction, asphalt, and explosives. The other minerals included in the newsletter highlight were Red Beryl found in Millard County, Beryllium found in Millard County, Potash found in Grand County, Magnesium found in Tooele County, and Halloysite found in Juab County.
