Upgrades continue at the Vernal Regional Airport and the latest is thanks to collaboration between stakeholders involved. Airport Manager Ken Campbell explains that improving the entrance at the terminal began about 2 years ago when a rock island was removed out front and the driving area was raised up to remove the steps to the front door of the airport. Then a year ago, airport administration began working with Uintah County on grant opportunities in order to upgrade the front doors. Generous donations from Allsave Car Rental and Contour Airlines were added to the county and airport funding to make the purchase and installation a reality. The result is new electric doors that automatically open and close. Allsave Car Rental owner Art Herrera says the new doors are important for safety reasons, explaining that the swinging doors were problematic and he was worried someone would get hurt. He also explains that they are happy to invest in the airport as they have experienced growth from a 6 car fleet 5 years ago to about 75 cars now and more anticipated to be added with the new Denver flight underway. A Contour Airline representative shared that the new doors are important to improve safety and ease for all guests by being ADA compliant as well as providing environmental control inside the building. Upgrades to the airport over the last 2 years include new paint, carpet, artwork, and a new roof. It’s anticipated that work to the outside of the building may get underway this summer.
