A major storm in the region and beyond did serious damage on Friday. Uintah County Sheriff Steve Labrum reported by early evening that day that the Vernal area was hit hard and had left 6000 residents without power due to at least 5 broken power poles from the wind. “We sustained damage to poles and wires in multiple locations from the wind burst/storm,” shared Sheriff Labrum. “The power company is working on isolating the damage and then will work on restoring power to areas without damage.” National Weather Service had issued a severe thunderstorm watch on Friday afternoon that included northeastern Utah. High winds continued to be forecast through Saturday. Similar incidents of uprooted trees, damaged powerlines, and loss of power were reported throughout the entire state.
