A favorite family fun day is almost here. Families, scout groups, and nature lovers alike look forward every year to the Ouray National Wildlife Refuge and Ouray National Fish Hatchery Open House. In its 23rd year, the open house is being held this Saturday, May 13th from 7:30am to 1:00pm. “This free, family-friendly event will give people of all ages the chance to enjoy the scenic beauty of Ouray Refuge and learn about wildlife conservation and other subjects,” shares Refuge Manager Sonja Jahrsdoerfer. “Visitors will be able to touch animal furs and skulls, observe endangered fish in large tanks, see a live hawk up close, identify birds through a spotting scope, play a Monarch butterfly migration game, make a pine cone bird feeder, spray a fire truck hose, or try throwing an atlatl.” The Ouray Refuge is located about 30 miles southwest of Vernal on Highway 88.
