Two massive flags were on display to kick off the Community Flag Retirement Ceremony on Friday at the Western Park but within the hour of the event starting, two became one. The nearly 70 foot flag that has flown over Vernal parades and community events for years was lowered and respectfully cut up and burned. Hundreds more flags were respectfully retired throughout the rest of the day. Many families attended to learn about flag etiquette and show patriotism and gratitude on Veterans Day. This was the case for community member Andrew Bentley. “Not having gone through the Scout Program I was really there to observe, learn about how to retire a flag, and pay respects…both to the veterans and the flags that have been so present in our public settings,” shares Bentley. “I took my two youngest in hopes that they might get a little more appreciation for both the flags and veterans. And some of it rubbed off.” The Bentleys were among the few lucky ones to go home with a star from the large flag which they will now properly display in their home. The Community Flag Retirement Ceremony is expected to become an annual event.
