There may not be a crystal ball but a guest on the Uintah Basin Today Show on Newstalk 104.5FM and AM920 KVEL had plenty to share based on first hand knowledge about the future of wax and oil products coming out of the Uintah Basin. Jim Finley, President of Finley Resources, explained that the production of Utah Industrial Wax, which is the primary focus of Finley Resources, will play a critical role in America’s energy transition. Often called waxy crude, Finley explained the traditional use of what he calls Uinta Wax is for it to be refined into gasoline, diesel, and jet fuel or used for cosmetics and many other products. While there is the move away from fossil fuels, Finley explained that the demand for Uinta Wax actually continues to go up because it is now in high demand in the manufacturing of lubricants for such things as wind turbines and high mileage vehicles. The game has changed, said Finley, and now they have developed markets on the Texas coast with nearly unlimited potential but which is presently limited by transportation issues. For now they truck 20,000 barrels of Uinta Wax a day over the mountain to load onto rail cars in Carbon County that are destined for Texas. The growing uses of Uinta Wax and its demand should not be taken lightly. In fact, Finley emphasized that because of its many uses, he believes the Uintah Basin with its Uinta Wax will be one of the last places where fossil fuels are produced as the product value is high and the demand is expected to remain high as well.
