Local paleontologists are following up on a 153 year old lead in the hunt for an elusive fossil. The folks at the Utah Field House of Natural History State Park Museum, more commonly referred to as the Dinosaur Museum, have asked the public to keep an eye out for a type of fossil that is recorded to have been found in either Uintah or Daggett County in 1870. “The fossils come from a single thin layer within dark gray mudstone but the fossils are light gray or tan to white,” shares the announcement. “Finding the layer is like a needle in a haystack but fragments of these animals, [which are] relatives of starfish, should be visible on the surface of the ground nearby.” An image of the Uintacrinus Socialis fossil can be found on the Museum’s Facebook page or with this news story on www.BasinNow.com. If you have seen anything like it, please contact the Utah Field House of Natural History at 435-789-3799.
