Colorado’s Highway 13 may be getting some major upgrades if federal funding comes through at the request of the Colorado Department of Transportation. CDOT has applied for $21 million dollars in federal funding that would be added to $60 million dollars from the state to see major safety upgrades complete on the stretch of road that runs north from Rifle, through Meeker and up to Craig and beyond. The general idea is to add 8-foot shoulders, rumble strips, improve curves in the road, and add wildlife fencing. Passing lanes are also proposed in certain areas. The Grand Junction Sentinel reports that CDOT officials say the high number of accidents and fatalities on Highway 13, including those involving wildlife, are hoped to help this project stand out in the federal grant process where there is significant competition.
