The Battle at Milk Creek, that took place near Meeker, Colorado between the Utes and the U.S. Army in 1879, is known as the last and longest of the Indian Wars. The conflict itself is heaped with emotion that could be used to spark anger but that isn’t what Milk Creek Battlefield Park is about. The park was founded in hopes that all people would gather together and share stories of shared history. The park was dedicated on September 29, 2015 with both sides of the battle being remembered. Just this last July the park received commemorative signage explaining what took place. Now the park will be the site of the 140th Anniversary Commemoration of the Milk Creek Battle. Members of the Ute Indian Tribe and descendants of the U.S. soldiers will participate. All are invited Saturday, September 28th at the park on Rio Blanco County Road 15 starting at 11:30am. Those attending should bring warm clothes, water, chairs and a potluck dish to share.
