Throughout October, Utah Division Wildlife Resource biologists are partnering with the Wyoming Game and Fish Department to catch, tag and then release roughly 1,000 lake trout. They are aiming to catch trout less than 28 inches long as a part of a study. The study is trying to get a population estimate for this size of lake trout. During the last several years the DWR have urged anglers to catch and keep lake trout that are under 25 inches. Flaming Gorge in particular has lake trout larger than 25 inches that primarily consume kokanee salmon and rainbow trout. If the abundant population of smaller lake trout (under 25 inches) is not reduced, there could be impacts on the salmon and rainbow trout populations, as well as fewer fish to feed the trophy lake trout in the reservoir.
