The Utah Division of Wildlife Resources wants to remind the public to be aware of the new rules that started in 2020 concerning the collection or possession of reptiles or amphibians. So before you decide to keep a pet while out on a hike, you need to find out if a collection permit or other documentation is required and take the Utah reptile and amphibian orientation course. Be sure to know what and how many of each species you can keep and which are prohibited. Obtain needed collection permits or certificate of registration and always be sure to complete the mandatory reporting requirement. A couple of things that you need to know is that once you remove any reptile or amphibian from the wild, it can not be released back into the wild. Selling wild-caught reptiles and amphibians is also illegal, though selling their offspring is legal if it complies with the rules. There is no collecting on national parks, tribal lands, as well as federal and state wildlife refuges. For more information, visit the Utah Division of Wildlife Resources website.
