Today is Earth Day and the Division of Wildlife Resources has shared easy ways to help wildlife on this day and every day of the year. One way you can help wildlife is to take pictures of different species — such as plants, insects, reptiles and amphibians — (from a safe distance) and submit those sightings to the iNaturalist app or website. Another way to help wildlife is to always make sure to dispose of your garbage properly to decrease impacts on wildlife. A unique way to help is to turn off your outdoor lights at night. Birds migrate at different times through the year, including now, and the lights can disorient the birds and draw them off course. And yes, many do migrate at night when it’s dark. A tip often heard is to never feed wildlife. It is highly discouraged due to safety concerns, the spread of Chronic Wasting Disease, and the harm it can cause to the wildlife. Don’t move or transfer fish or wildlife and be sure to buy a hunting and fishing license to support conservation of the state’s fish and wildlife. For more tips, visit wildlife.utah.gov.
