The Division of Wildlife Resources issued a press release sharing that a total of 1,007 wild animals and fish were illegally killed and investigated by Utah Division of Law Enforcement conservation officers in Utah in 2024, a slight decrease from the number illegally killed in 2023. Some of the animals illegally killed included: 216 deer, 12 of which were classified as “trophy” animals and 140 elk, 20 of which were classified as “trophy” animals. There were also 7 moose, 4 bison, 5 bears, 12 cougars, 3 bald eagles, and 371 fish. The remaining illegally killed wildlife included small game mammals, waterfowl, raptors, and a variety of other wildlife species. A total of 6,436 violations were detected in 2024, and of those, 1,474 citations were issued. Officers contacted more than 32,000 people in 2024. Last year, individuals were most often cited for fishing or hunting without a valid license. In 2024, 46 people had their hunting or fishing privileges suspended.
