A viewing event is coming up for the amazing North American hawk, the osprey. “The largest breeding osprey colony in Utah — and one of the largest osprey populations in the interior part of the western U.S. — is found at Flaming Gorge Reservoir,” shares DWR Conservation Outreach Manager Tonya Kieffer-Selby. Catching the moment an osprey heads out for a snack can be quite the experience. “If you are lucky, you might get to see an osprey dive feet first into the water to capture a fish in its powerful talons,” says Kieffer-Selby. “After capturing a fish, an osprey will carry it back to its perch or nest and share it with its mate and young. You’ll also hear the ospreys’ shrieking calls as they fly around the area.” The free viewing event will take place next to the parking lot at the Flaming Gorge Dam Visitor Center on July 6th from 9am to noon.
