DWR: Ethics Course Required to Gather Shed Antlers

by | Feb 10, 2021 | News | 0 comments

For many in the Basin collecting shed antlers is a fun pastime, sometimes with the whole family. However, late winter and early spring is the toughest time of the year for deer, elk and moose. It is for this reason that the Utah Division of Wildlife Resources requires those that go hunting for sheds to take the Antler Gathering Ethics Course. DWR Captain Wyatt Bubak states in a press release, “During winter, big game animals, especially deer, often have a difficult time finding food. If you spook an animal and cause it to run, the animal has to use up its fat reserves and the energy it needs to make it through the winter.” The free course shows individuals how to gather without stressing the animals or damaging the habitat. Any individual planning to gather through April 15th can link to the course through wildlife.utah.gov. Once the course is finished, print out the certificate of completion and carry it while gathering shed antlers.
