Snakes, lizards, and toads, oh my! The Uintah Basin has some great outdoors to explore and wildlife to discover and if an individual happens to come across any reptiles or amphibians the Utah Division of Wildlife Resources has a great app to explore. The app is called iNaturalist and people can use it to identify the reptiles and amphibians that they come across on adventures. Also by uploading findings the app helps herpetologists to better understand the distribution of the different species across Utah. The priority is to collect information on Species of Greatest Conservation Need. The project has already had over 14,00 observations made with 117 species being identified. “Regular contributions to this database are really important for determining which species benefit most from our management and conservation actions,” shares DWR Herpetologist and Native Species Coordinator Drew Dittmer. “Additionally, these observations on non-native reptiles and amphibians are also helpful for DWR to respond to potentially invasive populations of species.” The app offers a chance to journal observations, upload pictures and view where other people have found species.
