A DUI arrest was made in Vernal City after a pickup was reported as having backed into a gas pump and then driving away. According to the Affidavit of Probable Cause, an officer had pulled into the gas station when a person approached the officer and said someone had just hit a gas pump and pointed out a purple Ford pickup with smoke stack exhaust pipes leaving the parking lot. The officer got into his patrol vehicle and initiated a traffic stop on the purple Ford. The officer observed damage to the passenger side rear bumper of the purple pickup. 27-year-old James Dean Boyles was the driver and sole occupant of the vehicle. The officer asked Boyles if the dent on the passenger side rear bumper was from backing into the gas pump and Boyles said that it was. The officer detected the odor of an alcoholic beverage and asked Boyles if he had been drinking. He stated that he had. Boyles had a positive Portable Breath Test and was placed under arrest on the charges of DUI and Failure to Comply with Duties at a Vehicle Accident. Boyles also had a DUI conviction in 2020.
