Duchesne Volunteer Fire Department On Winter Holiday Fires

The Duchesne Volunteer Fire Department is utilizing social media to educate the public on winter fire safety. When it comes to the holidays there are a few activities that pose increased fire risks. Topping that list is the use of candles with the top 3 days for home candle fires being Christmas Day, New Year’s Day, and New Year’s Eve. Over half of all home decoration fires in December are started by candles and more than a third of all home decoration fires are candle related. Always keep candles at least 12 inches away from anything that burns. Christmas trees and lights can also increase fire risks. While Christmas tree fires are not common, when they do occur they are extremely dangerous and have even resulted in death. Having a heat source too close to the Christmas tree causes 1 in 4 winter fires. Be smart and enjoy a safe Christmas holiday.
