For the second year in a row, the lobby of Discovery Elementary has transformed into an ‘ofrenda’ in celebration of the traditional Mexican celebration Día de Muertos, known in English as Day of the Dead. The tradition is fitting as Discovery is the only school in the District that has a Spanish dual immersion program.
“Discovery’s dual immersion teachers built the multi-tiered display full of traditional brightly colored coverings, tombstones, flowers, esqueletos (skeletons), papel picado (intricate paper banners), and candles (tea lights),” shares the District’s announcement. “Students, staff, and the Discovery community were then invited to add photos of their loved ones or place offerings on the ofrenda, including fruit, cookies, candy, breads, fresh tamales, drinks, and books.” All have loved sharing stories and memories of their loved ones.
