A fire burning east of Flaming Gorge in Sweetwater County was met with a heavy response on Sunday as the region remains under Red Flag conditions. According to Sweetwater County Fire Warden Mike Bournazian, the ‘Currant Fire’ was first reported at 1:30pm on Sunday in the Currant Creek Ridge area and resources responded immediately from the Rock Spring BLM, Ashley National Forest, Sweetwater County Fire Department, and numerous federally contracted air resources. On Sunday, the fire was estimated at 300 acres and on Monday it was estimated to have grown to about 500 to 700 acres. “The public is requested to stay out of the Currant Creek area east of County Rd 33 for the next several days,” shares Bournazian. “No structures are threatened and no injuries have been reported. The cause of the fire is still under investigation, however there was lightning reported in the area several days prior. Sweetwater County Fire Department and [their] Federal Partners urge everyone to stay extremely vigilant in their use of outdoor recreational activities during this hot and dry time of year as we remain under Red Flag conditions again today and perhaps later in the week.” For more information on the Currant Fire, contact the BLM.
