A critical incident on Wednesday that began in Craig and ended near the town of Hayden is under investigation. The Colorado Bureau of Investigation issued a press release at the request of Colorado State Patrol sharing the following. The incident began when members of the Craig Police Department attempted to make a traffic stop of a 36-year-old man driving a late model Honda. At approximately 6:45 a.m., the suspect failed to pull over for the traffic stop and sped away. A pursuit was not initiated by the Craig Police Department. A CSP sergeant driving in the area was passed by the suspect in a no passing zone on a stretch of Highway 40 in the town of Hayden traveling at a high rate of speed, and a pursuit was initiated. After approximately two miles, and outside of the city limits, the sergeant initiated a Tactical Vehicle Intervention maneuver to end the pursuit. The man was ejected from the vehicle when his car struck an embankment. Emergency responders attended to the suspect until he was transported for treatment. His condition is unknown at this time. Members of the 14th Judicial District CIT arrived on-scene and investigated the incident. Per standard CSP policy and procedure, the sergeant has been placed on Administrative Leave.
