The Mayor of Craig is making a pretty big career change this month and it is making headlines. Ryan Hess was elected by the people of Craig in November 2021. He has been a public servant for over 20 years having served as a firefighter, police officer, trooper, council member, and most recently as a sheriff’s deputy. Wanting to learn more about the criminal justice system, Hess began studying law 6 years ago, according to the Craig Press. He completed law school in 2020 through a reputable online program while working full time in law enforcement. What came next put to rest any doubt whether or not Hess was cut out to be a lawyer. The State of Colorado had a firm rule that only those who finished an in-person law program could sit for the Colorado bar exam. Hess petitioned the Colorado Supreme Court, arguing that his online education had been as valuable and rigorous as an in-person program. He won and passed the bar this year. Part of his argument was that rural Colorado needs more lawyers, including Moffat County. Mayor Hess finished up his last day as a sheriff’s deputy on December 1st and is now setting up his practice so he can serve the City as not only Mayor but with their legal needs as well.
