Colorado Parks & Wildlife have provided a new update on the wolves that have been verified in neighboring Moffat County. Back in January, wildlife officers confirmed the presence of a wolf pack and there has been plenty of public discourse on the pack’s presence since then. In this week’s announcement, CPW shares that a member of the public spotted the wolves in Moffat County on Tuesday, March 3rd, “providing a credible sighting report of seven wolves.” Wildlife officials investigated and visually verified six wolves in the reported area the next day on March 4th. “Over the past few weeks, wildlife managers have heard from area residents about howling, carcasses, and tracks but actual sightings remain rare,” shares wildlife officials. “Wolves travel over large distances, especially when establishing new home ranges, so the movement and new sightings are not surprising…The wolves migrating into Colorado are likely from larger populations in Wyoming, but could be from populations in Idaho and Montana.” Wolves are a federally endangered species and in Colorado are under the authority of the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service. CWP wants all members of the public to know that killing a wolf in Colorado can result in federal charges, including a $100,000 dollar fine and one year in prison. The public is asked to give wolves space and report sightings to Colorado Parks & Wildlife.
