For outdoorsmen looking for a hunt that’s not too strenuous, the cottontail rabbit hunt is underway. According to the Division of Wildlife Resources, cottontail hunting is enjoyable for seasoned hunters as well as those just getting into the sport and cottontails are found across the state, including in northeastern Utah. A survey of the state rabbit population revealed last summer that Duchesne and Uintah Counties hold the highest numbers of rabbits. “Cottontails are fun to hunt,” shares DWR upland game coordinator Jason Robinson. “Cottontails usually hide under rocks or brush. Sometimes, they’ll even hide in burrows. Draws that have tall sagebrush or rabbit brush in them also have loose, deep soil that the rabbits can often find burrows in. Rabbits will also hide under large rocks, or they’ll hide in the crevice of a rock.” Cottontails can also be found resting and sunning themselves on a flat rock near their favorite hiding spot.
