A crowd gathered at the Sweetwater County School District 1 regularly scheduled board meeting on Monday in response to the lawsuit filed against the district in which a couple allege that the district hid their child’s gender transition from them. The lawsuit in question is from Sean and Ashley Willey who filed a civil rights lawsuit in the U.S. District Court in April asserting that the District took away their parental and due process rights, familial privacy rights, and religious rights. The Willeys allege that no one at the school said anything to them about their daughter’s transition for at least 6 months. Cowboy State Daily provided a detailed report of this week’s board meeting, including the response of the board chairwoman Carol Jelaco who defended the school district and said the district has “no intention of attempting to try this suit in the court of public opinion.” Among the many questions and concerns directed at the board, Wyoming Representative Clark Stith urged the board to adopt a “reasonable” parental-rights policy and warned that choosing to not do so could result in “a very heavy-handed approach from the state Legislature.”
