Great memories and good times are what we look forward to heading into the holiday season but it is important to note that it is also a time when scammers and con artists up their attempts to cash in on your holiday spending. Law enforcement agencies in the region are urging all to be cautious and aware of phishing scams. The Utah Department of Public Safety says there are three common characteristics of phishing emails and texts. First, they create a sense of urgency. Oftentimes the phisher will compel you to act quickly. They do this by threatening to cut off access to accounts, systems or other resources. Second, they often look official. Remember that things like logos, branding and design elements are easy to copy and can make the scam look very official. Third, they usually ask you for information. If the email or text urges you to click on a link and provide a password or login information for an account, it is almost definitely a phishing attack. Remember to think before you click. Oftentimes you can hover over a link to see where it is directed. If it is not to the official company website, do not click!
