The Burbot Bash Ice Fishing Derby at Flaming Gorge doubles as a way to discuss an unwelcome invader while having a whole lot of fun. Called the ‘Ugliest Fish in the West’, the burbot is a freshwater cod with a serpentine-like body native to waters in the east that has been illegally stocked in Flaming Gorge Reservoir. This invasive species has had a very negative effect on the sport fishery as there are no known predators of the burbot in the Gorge and burbot have voracious appetites, including of the eggs of other fish. The annual Burbot Bash offers a great way to introduce anglers to the family-friendly sport of ice fishing and the derby is a prime way to make a dent in the burbot population.
