If you’re looking for a new hobby it may be time to join the Citizen Scientists that are part of an exciting cause. The public is invited to participate in data collection of the migratory movements of monarch butterflies and it’s really as simple as using your phone. Project Monarch uses tiny tracking devices that transmit the same frequency as Bluetooth devices meaning that modern smartphones can potentially be a receiver for the tags. The Uinta Basin Birds & Butterflies unit recently shared that monarch butterflies were tagged locally last week. One male monarch named FSO-01-Makenna was released from the Ashley National Forest Vernal Office and anyone with the app can scan for Makenna’s tag. Download the Project Monarch App and start scanning for Makenna and other monarch butterflies today to be part of this exciting project.
