A fire in a remote area of the Uintah and Ouray Indian Reservation continues to grow. The Bear Trap Fire was first reported on July 21st located on a ridge just north of Bear Trap Knoll west of Big Springs on the reservation. It was inaccessible by vehicle but helicopters immediately began to work on the fire. It was monitored from the air and reported as 5 acres for several days. On July 25th, the fire was estimated at 100 acres and continued to be monitored by aircraft while allowing it to move through steep drainages. Now 10 days since it started, the Bear Trap Fire has grown to 800 acres as it moves through the rugged terrain. “Smoke is visible each afternoon,” shares the BIA Forestry & Wildland Fire-Uintah & Ouray Agency. “Aircraft continue to monitor the fire’s activity as well as firefighters posted at lookout points. This fire continues to burn and is allowing fire to play its natural role in the ecosystem.”
