It was a perfect day at the Northeast Region Special Olympics on Wednesday at Uintah High’s Coach Belcher Stadium. Area coordinator Frank Crowther said there were over 200 athletes which was more than ever before with about half of the athletes from the west side of the Uintah Basin and half from the Vernal area. This also translated into the largest crowd there supporting the athletes and having a great time. The Special Olympics kicked off last week with the Duchesne County law enforcement torch run on Thursday with stops in Duchesne, Myton, and Roosevelt. The Uintah County law enforcement torch run was held on Monday and everyone had a great time. There was a wide variety of track and field events at the Special Olympics on Wednesday. “The athletes really enjoyed themselves,” shares Crowther. “This is a day when these athletes get to have the spotlight on them and it’s fun to see their smiles and camaraderie for each other. If everybody were more like them, this world would be a better place to be.” The fun and competition continues next week with cycling on Tuesday and swimming on Wednesday. The Special Olympics Utah Summer Games will be held in the Salt Lake area on June 9th and 10th.
