Heat is the number one weather killer in the United States and Ashley Regional Medical Center has provided a list of heat safety tips. Overexposure to heat can be especially harmful for children and senior citizens. Keep those you love safe with the following tips: Be aware of the temperature and humidity levels and modify your activities accordingly. Always use an SPF-15 or higher sunscreen. Wear sunglasses when outside to protect your eyes from the sun’s rays. Limit outdoor activities when temperatures are at their highest. Stay hydrated and drink lots of water and low or no-sugar beverages. Take advantage of cooler areas outside. Head indoors when the temperatures rise above 90 degrees. Avoid enclosed places like cars or garages. NEVER leave children or animals in the car unattended. Dress for comfort with loose-fitting, lightweight and light-colored clothing. Take breaks when exercising. And finally, limit or avoid adult beverages as alcohol can impair your body’s ability to self regulate its temperature.
