The work of managing Ashley National Forest goes beyond the physical work of managing the forest itself. There is also the ongoing joy of paperwork and planning. Susan Eickhoff, Ashley National Forest Supervisor, gave a glimpse into that side of Forest management during an update she provided during the most recent Vernal Chamber luncheon. Eickhoff stated that they just finished the Forest Plan Revision final Environmental Impact Statement and the new Forest Plan which will replace the 1986 plan. She said it’s about time the Forest had a new plan and that it was sent that day to their regional office for review. The hope is to have a draft Record of Decision in March. Work has also been underway on the Flaming Gorge National Recreation Area Management Plan. Eickhoff shared that they have been convening with stakeholders and members of the public the past few months and now have a draft plan ready to go out to the public. It is expected the public will have the opportunity to comment on that plan in mid-November.
