Final Geology Caravan Tour of Flaming Gorge On Saturday
By Kristin Forbis, Aug 5, 2022
Since the end of June, Flaming Gorge has had a driving tour presenting the geology and ecology of the area. This Saturday will be the last chance to be part of this tour for the season. The tour is conducted by Tom Elder, the co-author of Field Guide to the FLAMING-GORGE Uintas National Scenic Byway. People can be part of the full five hour interpretive tour or join at any of the five stops. At noon you can meet your guide Tom Elder at Red Canyon Visitor Center on Red Canyon Road in Flaming Gorge. Then the tour will head into Sheep Creek Geological Loop. From 1 to 2pm you can meet with the group at Tour Ute Fire Lookout Tower, a site on the National Register of Historic Places. Then from 2 to 3:30pm the tour will drive through the loop, making various stops along the way for geological and historical interpretation. From 3:30 to 4pm there is a walk through riparian forest via Sheep Creek Nature Trail where the loop intersects Hwy 44. Finally, from 4:30 to 5pm the tour will be at Sheep Creek Overlook on Hwy 44.
