The suspect in a Utah armed robbery was captured in Rock Springs
Tuesday morning
. According to Sweetwater County Sheriff Mike Lowell, the Sheriff’s Office was notified of a stolen 2018 Chevrolet Traverse with a Utah license plate in the area and the driver was a suspect in an armed robbery. The vehicle, equipped with an on-board electronic tracking device, was located in Rock Springs and Deputy Sheriff David Henderson, assisted by other deputies and Rock Springs police, was able to stop the Traverse and arrest 46-year-old Richard Brandon Mendoza. Mendoza finally complied with instructions when the K9 officer was readied for deployment. Sheriff Lowell says they are working with Utah authorities on the investigation. Using a knife, Mendoza forced a man in Brigham City to drive him to an ATM earlier that day in the early morning hours with the intent to make the man withdraw money for him. At the bank the man was able to get away and Mendoza took the vehicle. The OnStar system in the vehicle made it possible to catch Mendoza quickly. He is now in custody at the Sweetwater County Detention Center in Rock Springs.
