Wildfires from as close as Duchesne County and clear to California have filled the Uintah Basin sky with smoke. The Utah Department of Environmental Quality reported on Monday afternoon that air quality levels in the Uintah Basin ranged from Moderate and Unhealthy for Sensitive Groups to Unhealthy. The Utah DEQ also shared that smoke from wildfires could cause high concentrations of particulates in populated areas and if smoke becomes thick, persons with existing heart or respiratory ailments should reduce physical exertion and outdoor activity. TriCounty Health Director Jordan Mathis also emphasized this point concerning the smoke in the air. “People with respiratory issues should stay inside as much as possible,” shares Mathis. “Masks can be helpful as well when they do have to go outside for sustained periods.” An updated map showing Uintah Basin Air Quality can be found at ubair.usu.edu. A strong cold front Monday night through Tuesday is anticipated to clear out most of the smoke.
