There will be a prescribed fire project near Jensen and could start as soon as next week if weather permits. The Stewart Lake WMA prescribed fire project hopes to remove “dead fuels of cattails, phragmites, bulrush, and other vegetation to improve wildlife habitat by reducing selenium by exposure of area through removal of surface vegetation. Previous vegetation control methods (mechanical and spraying) have not been successful.” The area is adjacent to the Green River which means wind patterns in the river corridor are unpredictable. All precautions are being taken with a target completion date being March 1st. The burn will happen across about 210 acres and smoke will be visible based on the heavy fuel loads. The project should take a day with isolated smolderings possible for the next 2 to 3 days. Post-burn monitoring will continue to occur for several days after.
