While we probably haven’t seen the last of winter storms, Roosevelt City has asked for help preserving the streets by taking advantage of the warmer weather and snow melt. When the weather warms up and the snow begins to melt it helps if the runoff can find its way to storm drains. “The number one cause of potholes and other damage to city streets is the freeze-thaw cycle,” shares Roosevelt City. “When temperatures are above freezing, water works its way into any small crack in the pavement. Then, as temperatures drop, the water freezes and expands, causing cracks to expand as well. This is especially bad in areas of standing water.” To help prevent this, Roosevelt City is asking that residents check the gutters on their property to make sure that snow melt is draining properly. “If you see large puddles forming, please clear a small trench through the snow to allow water to continue to flow toward the storm drain.” This step can be followed by residents beyond Roosevelt City as well and can go a long way in preserving city streets.
