Don’t Miss the Supermoon! Total Lunar Eclipse Tonight

by | May 25, 2021 | News | 0 comments

There is going to be a total, meaning 100%, lunar eclipse happening tonight. It is the first in the last two and a half years. Dinosaur National Monument has shared some information to help the Uintah Basin to enjoy this event. The eclipse happens within hours of the moon’s closest orbit to the Earth. This “Supermoon” will make the Moon appear 7% larger than average. The estimated timeline for our area is as follows: At 8pm on May 25th the moon will rise. At 2:45am on May 26th the moon enters the penumbral phase in which it begins to turn gray. At 3:45am the umbral phase starts in which it will look like someone has taken a bite out of the moon. Most of the moon will be red sometime between 5:00am and 5:30am because the Sun’s rays bend through the Earth’s atmosphere to illuminate the moon indirectly.  At 6:00am the sun will rise as the moon sets.
