Tragedy struck recently and a man is dead after an accident on Black Mountain in Moffat County. According to the Craig Daily Press, the man in his mid-to-late 60’s died Thursday when the side-by-side he was traveling in with his wife could not get through part of the road because of a snowdrift. The man got out and tried to use the winch on the front of the side-by-side to help get the vehicle unstuck. His wife reported that in the process he fell into a tree well and she could not reach him. As she went for help two men pulled her husband out and began performing CPR. Tragically, it was too late and he succumbed to his injuries. Tree well immersion accidents are especially dangerous and all should use extreme caution in deep snow as a tree well can immobilize and suffocate.
