Forever a Uintah Ute! Uintah High Athletics took to social media on Wednesday to remember Billy Murray, an amazing man who spent decades supporting the students of Uintah High School and who sadly has passed away. “In his sophomore year, Billy Murray was Uintah’s first state wrestling champion at 138 lbs. He went on to become the school’s first three-time state wrestling champion…Murray lettered in football, wrestling and track in all three years at Uintah, graduating in 1958. He wrestled on scholarship at the University of Utah from 1959 to 1961 before being drafted into the Army. He served his country until 1965.” After returning to Vernal he not only helped with the wrestling team but he officiated wrestling and football for 25 years as well as helped with countless athletic events for many decades. Billy Murray was inducted into the Uintah Athletics Hall of Fame in 2017. “I have never met someone who loved Uintah more than Grandpa Bill,” said Murray’s grandson Brandon Johnson, who coaches the Utes’ boys basketball team. “Some of my favorite memories are going to state wrestling every year with him, even when he didn’t have kids wrestling in it.” Evans Family Media joins Uintah High Athletics and many others in offering condolences to the Murray family.
