A Moffat County mother has been arrested in a child death investigation. The Moffat County Sheriff’s Office issued a press release on Friday stating that on March 11th, at about 8am the Sheriff’s Office was notified of a suspicious vehicle near county road 54 in unincorporated Moffat County. “The road is not frequently traveled in winter months,” shares the Sheriff’s Office. “Deputies were dispatched to the area, locating the vehicle on a service road south of county road 54. The vehicle was unoccupied and appeared stuck in the mud/snow…Three individuals, (36-year-old) Kaylee Messerly of Craig and her two daughters(1 ½ and 3 years of age) were located approximately 1 mile from the vehicle. Messerly and the 3-year-old were found alive, suffering from environmental exposure injuries. The 1 ½ year old was found deceased. Messerly and her surviving daughter were immediately transported by tracked UTV from the scene to an awaiting Memorial Regional Health EMS ambulance…An investigation of the incident, led by the Moffat County Sheriff’s Office and the Investigative Division, resulted in the issuance of an arrest warrant for Kaylee Ann Messerly.” On April 9th, Messerly was arrested and later booked at the Moffat County Jail on the charges of Child Abuse Resulting in Death and Child Abuse Resulting in Serious Bodily Injury. FOX Denver 31 reported that Messerly tested positive for methamphetamines, amphetamines, and THC at the hospital while she was treated for frostbite and that her 3-year-old daughter had extreme frostbite that resulted in the amputation of the child’s feet.
