Senator Ron Winterton’s bill dealing with masks and schools has received its first formal YES in the process of becoming Utah law though adjustments were made to the bill’s wording. SB 187 is titled ‘Local Education Agency Policies Amendments’. It originally aimed to provide that schools not be “required to enforce a requirement in a public health order for individuals to wear a face mask on school grounds.” The bill’s general wording has been changed to state, “This bill requires the governor, the Department of Health, or a local health department to consult with a local education agency affected by a public health order requiring individuals to wear a face mask on school grounds.” After adjustments in wording were made, SB 187 passed the Senate Health and Human Services Committee with a vote of 5 For and 2 Against.
